The Story Behind the Flag: Why Every Veteran Roof Comes with a Flagpole

At The Third Estimate, giving back to those who have served is more than a project. It is a promise. Through our Think Third Patriot Project, we provide free roofs for veterans who have given so much to their communities and our country. But there is one special part of every installation that makes it even more meaningful. We include a flagpole installation for the recipients, complete with an American flag.

A Symbol That Means More Than Words

Our CEO, Tara Colopy, wears an American flag pin every single day. For her, it is not just decoration. It is a daily reminder of sacrifice, unity, and gratitude. That same meaning inspired her to include a flagpole with every Think Third Patriot Project installation.

When the flag is raised at a veteran’s home, it stands as a symbol of honor for their service, a fresh start for their home, and a daily reminder that their community stands with them.

The Power of the Flag in Our Work

Every star and stripe represents what we believe in at The Third Estimate: service, hard work, and pride in what we build. A flagpole installation for veterans is not just part of the project. It is the heart of it. It is a way to say thank you in a way that lasts longer than words or even shingles.

Our crews love this moment. After long days spent resheeting roofs, fixing storm damage, and making sure everything is built to last, watching a flag wave above a veteran’s home reminds the entire team why we do what we do.

When Service Inspires Service

This year, our team had the honor of helping Air Force veteran Jared Bzdok through the Think Third Patriot Project. Jared served six years, including two tours in Iraq on search and rescue missions. After a bad experience with a storm chaser company that left his roof rotting and unsafe, we stepped in to give his family the new roof they deserved.

It turned into a full community day. Neighbors stopped by, kids played ball in the yard, and Jared grilled for everyone, serving up burgers, hot dogs, and brisket he smoked for hours. The whole scene reflected what the flag represents: togetherness, gratitude, and pride.

At the end of the day, Jared gifted Tara a bottle of Horse Soldier Bourbon, made by veterans who served after 9/11. The gesture brought her to tears and was a reminder that when you give from the heart, it always comes full circle.

Keeping the Tradition Strong

For nearly 30 years, The Third Estimate has stood for quality, community, and integrity. We are proud to be a local family business that does more than build roofs. We build trust and relationships. Every flag we raise is a promise to continue giving back to the people who make our mission matter. Because to us, a roof protects your home, but a flag reminds you why it is worth protecting.
